Custom Diaper Packaging MOQ: Why Each Size Is A Separate SKU

If my total order quantity is already large, why does the supplier still need the quantity for each size?

The reason is that custom diaper packaging cannot be calculated only according to the total project quantity.

Different diaper sizes have different product dimensions and thicknesses. They therefore require different bag sizes. Once the bag dimensions change, the artwork and printing layout must also be adjusted.

For the packaging manufacturer, each size is normally treated as a separate SKU for quotation and production.

Although this article uses diaper packaging as the main example, the same MOQ and cylinder-cost principles also apply to sanitary napkin, wet wipes, tissue and other custom-printed flexible packaging.

What Is an SKU in Diaper Packaging?

An SKU is a product specification that needs to be designed, managed and produced separately.

For example, an adult diaper range may include:

• Adult Diaper Size M

• Adult Diaper Size L

• Adult Diaper Size XL

Although these products belong to the same range and may share the same visual style, each diaper size has different dimensions and thickness.

Even when the pack count is the same, the folded product volume may be different. Each size therefore requires a corresponding bag size.

Sizes M, L and XL are therefore normally treated as three separate packaging SKUs.

Why Does Each Size Need Separate Artwork?

The artwork must match the actual bag dimensions.

When the bag width, length or gusset changes, the graphic proportions, text positions, size information and structural areas must also be adjusted.

This normally includes:

• Brand logo and main graphics

• Product size and pack count

• Product descriptions and barcode

• Handle or hole positions

• Gusset and sealing areas

Even if all sizes use the same brand identity, each size still needs separate artwork prepared according to its own bag dimensions. Artwork for Size M cannot simply be used to produce Size L or XL bags.

Why Is the Quantity of Each SKU Required?

Different SKUs may have different bag dimensions, artwork, material consumption, printing cylinders and bag-making settings.

The supplier therefore cannot calculate the price using only the total order quantity.

For example, a total order of 500,000 bags may appear large. However, if it is divided among many sizes and product ranges, the actual quantity of each SKU may be relatively low.

Every change of bag size or artwork requires the production line to change cylinders, adjust equipment and confirm production settings.

A clearer approach is to provide the estimated quantity of each SKU:

This allows the supplier to evaluate material consumption, production arrangements and the unit price for each specification.

Why Does Each SKU Have an MOQ?

MOQ means Minimum Order Quantity.

Custom-printed packaging goes through several production stages, including film blowing, printing, inspection and bag making.

Before production begins, the manufacturer must also prepare materials and inks, install the printing cylinders, adjust the equipment and inspect the first production samples.

These preparation costs and production losses still exist when the quantity of one SKU is small. If the quantity is too low, the cost per bag increases significantly and normal production becomes less efficient.

At MSH Packaging, the standard MOQ for custom-printed packaging is:

20,000 pieces per size/SKU.

This does not mean 20,000 pieces for the entire project. It means 20,000 pieces for each individual size or SKU.

If a project includes adult diaper packaging in Sizes M, L and XL, the quantity of each size must be evaluated separately.

What Is Printing Cylinder Cost?

Most custom diaper packaging is produced using gravure printing.

Gravure printing requires printing cylinders to be made according to the bag dimensions, artwork and printing colors. In most cases, each printing color requires a corresponding cylinder.

For this reason, printing cylinder costs are normally quoted separately from the bag unit price.

Cylinder costs are mainly affected by:

• Bag and artwork dimensions

• Printing layout

• Design repeat length

• Number of printing colors

MSH Packaging supports gravure printing with up to 11 colors.

Because different sizes use different bag dimensions and artwork, their cylinder requirements normally need to be evaluated separately. Buyers should not assume that all sizes in the same product range can share one set of cylinders.

Can Different Sizes Share Artwork and Printing Cylinders?

Usually, they cannot be shared directly.

Adult diapers in Sizes M, L and XL have different product dimensions and thicknesses, which normally results in different bag dimensions.

When the bag size changes, the graphic proportions, text positions, gusset areas and sealing areas must be rearranged. Each size therefore needs separate artwork.

Even when the brand logo, colors and overall visual style remain the same, the layout must still be adapted to each bag size. The printing cylinders must then be evaluated according to the final artwork for each SKU.

What Must Be Confirmed Before Cylinder Production?

Printing cylinders are custom-made according to the approved artwork.

If the bag dimensions, printing colors or graphic positions are changed after cylinder production, the existing cylinders may no longer be usable. New cylinders may be required, creating additional costs and delays.

Before cylinder production, confirm the following for every SKU:

• Final bag dimensions

• Final approved artwork

• Material structure and thickness

• Number of printing colors

• Product size and pack count

• Handle, hole and sealing positions

How Can Buyers Get a More Accurate Quotation?

For a project with multiple sizes, prepare the following information for each SKU:

Product size, pack count, bag dimensions, material thickness, artwork, printing colors and estimated quantity.
